Behavioral & Developmental Services
Attention, behavior, learning, and emotional well-being are important parts of your child's overall health. We partner with families, educators, and counselors to provide thoughtful evaluation, guidance, and support tailored to each child's needs.

How behavioral and developmental care fits into pediatrics
Mental health, learning, attention, and behavior are essential parts of a child's overall health and development. At Preferred Pediatrics, we routinely screen for developmental, behavioral, and emotional concerns during well-child visits and provide a supportive environment for the important conversations families may face along the way. When specialized evaluation or ongoing therapy is needed, we work closely with trusted psychologists, developmental specialists, counselors, and school-based resources throughout the Bayou Region and surrounding parishes to ensure every child receives comprehensive, coordinated care.
ADHD support for children and families
Comprehensive ADHD evaluations are typically performed by psychologists or developmental specialists with expertise in pediatric neuropsychological assessment. Once a formal diagnosis is established, Preferred Pediatrics provides ongoing medical management and support. We work closely with families to develop an individualized treatment plan, including prescribing and adjusting medications when appropriate, monitoring progress and side effects, and coordinating care with schools and other members of your child's support team.
For many families, we serve as the medical home that helps bring their child's ADHD care plan together, providing consistent guidance, regular follow-up, and long-term partnership as their child grows and succeeds.
Autism screening and referrals
We follow the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations by screening for autism spectrum disorder at 18 and 24 months, as well as any time a parent, caregiver, or provider has developmental concerns. If screening indicates that further evaluation may be beneficial, we guide families through the next steps and connect them with trusted developmental specialists and evaluation centers throughout the region.
Early identification can make a meaningful difference. By recognizing concerns early and connecting families with appropriate resources and support services, we help ensure children have the best opportunity to reach their full potential.
Mental health support for kids and teens
A child's mental and emotional well-being is just as important as their physical health. At Preferred Pediatrics, we regularly screen for concerns such as anxiety, depression, and emotional stress during adolescent visits and create a supportive, confidential environment where children and teens can feel comfortable sharing their experiences.
When additional support is needed, we work closely with families to connect them with trusted local therapists, counselors, and mental health specialists. Our goal is to ensure every child has access to the care, resources, and encouragement they need to thrive.
If your child or family is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or seek immediate care at the nearest emergency department.
ADHD Management
We provide ongoing support for children with ADHD, including medication management, progress monitoring, and coordination with schools and other providers. While we do not perform formal ADHD evaluations, we work closely with trusted specialists who conduct comprehensive diagnostic testing and partner with families throughout treatment.
Behavioral Concerns
Changes in behavior at home, school, or with peers can be challenging for both children and parents. We offer guidance, support, and evaluation of common behavioral concerns, helping families understand their options and connect with appropriate specialists when more comprehensive assessment or treatment is needed.
Autism Screenings
We provide autism screenings as part of routine developmental care and whenever concerns arise. If additional evaluation is recommended, we help families navigate the referral process and connect with experienced developmental specialists and evaluation centers.
Anxiety & Emotional Wellness Support
Children and teens face many emotional challenges as they grow. We provide a supportive environment where families can discuss concerns related to anxiety, mood, stress, and emotional well-being, while helping connect them with additional resources and mental health professionals when needed.
Speech & Development Referrals
When developmental concerns arise, early intervention can make a meaningful difference. We coordinate timely referrals to trusted speech therapists, occupational therapists, and developmental specialists throughout the region to ensure children receive the support they need.
Learning & School Concerns
We partner with families to address learning challenges, academic concerns, and school-related difficulties. Whether discussing classroom accommodations, 504 Plans, or Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), we help parents understand their options and advocate for the support their child needs to succeed.
